Winter Formal Highlights

BY DING '26FEBRUARY 12, 2026

Winter Formal––the zenith of every Groton student’s experience. Seeing everyone dressed up, the nacho bar, watching in awe as the Hundred House Library is transformed from a dusty book hotel where couples try unsuccessfully to get some private time to a LED-lit, streamer-decorated Eden (where couples try unsuccessfully to get some private time . . . ).

I did not attend Winter Formal because my dress was ugly (pick me, choose me, love me) and because the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra did not reschedule their performance even after I stressed to them the sanctity of Temu prom. So to live vicariously through all of you, I asked some students some of their Winter Formal stories.

“Well, when the dealer wasn’t looking I stole a case full of chips and sold them for the price of 67 asiago bagels . . . Oh wait, wrong Saturday.” —Robin Hood

“I re-tore my ACL after the DJ played ‘Low’ by Flo Rida five times over the course of the night.” —Everyone Who Has Ever Torn Their ACL at Groton

“What?” —Student Who Stood too Close to DJ

“By the time we got to the end of the photo line, I was a senior and my date had graduated from college.” —Youthful Lower Schooler Who Proposed with Witty Pun

“Mmm . . . individually packaged Sour Patch Kids.” —Bitter Upper Schooler Who Was Not Proposed to by Lower Schooler with Witty Pun

“I have cracked the code of taking formal photos. Girls never face the camera head-on. Boys always face the camera head-on and grab their crotch for bonus points.” —Groton Student Sociologist

“A night of vice before a morning of misery.” —People with Work Program the Following Day

“The real Winter Formal happens in the Music Wing.” —Eric Liang
